I found this new site via your Tripadvisor post. Less than 4 months till we get to snorkel everyday for 2 weeks! Wooohoooo! My question for you is- where did you get your fish/coral identifiers? I have cards for Hawaii and the Mexico area and you are definitely seeing and naming some stuff NOT on my cards. How did you figure out what everything is? We're staying at TNI in Bodden Town- I read the snorkeling is pretty good there. Can't wait to check out your neck of the woods, too! Thanks, take care. Leslie
Hi Leslie,
Two weeks! I’m jealous. I’ll try snorkeling off TNI on another visit this year and log a report (hopefully before you head there). I do understand it is supposed to be pretty good, so hopefully you enjoy it! I would recommend to search out Barefoot Beach and give it a try. The snorkeling is great and the beach itself is also very unique for Grand Cayman.
As for how I identify marine life and corals… I use a few resources. My primary go to is the excellent Fish ID series: http://www.fishid.com/ by Paul Humann and Ned DeLoach. You can also find these books on Amazon. Franko’s Maps also has a good laminated card you can take with you in the water which helps with on the spot ID’ing (I find many times, I forget half the stuff I saw by the time I get out of the water): http://frankosmaps.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Store_code=F&Screen=PROD&Product_Code=Cayman-Islands-Mini-Map-and-Reef-Creatures
My other options, since I leave the book at our condo, are:
- Easiest to use on-line source is at http://reefguide.org/carib/index.html
- The gallery at http://www.reef.org/resources/galleries
- The portfolios at http://www.reefimages.com/Fishes.htm
- The fish ID Index at http://www.marinelifephotography.com/fishes/fishes.htm
- If you have an idea of the name, this database is quite comprehensive: http://www.fishbase.org/
