Anonymous asked: Hey Testudo, My husband and I are in GC right now through May 14th and just scouted out Barefoot Beach today in hopes of going tomorrow at higher tide. Staying at the Lodges and if you happen to be in town during this week, we'd love to buy you a beer in thanks for your most helpful snorkel guide. Otherwise we owe you online when we get back... Hi Guys!
Hope you find good snorkeling conditions during your visit! Glad you found the guide info useful, but sadly I will not be back on-island for a few weeks….thanks for the offer though. Enjoy!
Cheers,
Testudo
Anonymous asked: Hi Testudo, we'll be coming to GC on Saturday to do lots of snorkeling. I've been reading that this is the season for thimble jellyfish larvae. Have you noticed any around GC? Are there any areas we should avoid? Thanks for your insight!
Thimble Jellyfish and their larvae can show up anytime, but usually make their appearance in Cayman waters in April, May and June. Since they drift with the currents, they can show up anywhere along the island.
I have encountered the adult Thimbles on occasion, but never been bothered by the larvae or “sea lice”, as they are often incorrectly called. I tend to see more Jellyfish (of all kinds) during low tides. Not sure why.
If I happen to come across any type of Jellyfish that I am not sure “stings” or not , I’ll usually head back to shore and put on a rash guard. Because where there is one Jellyfish, there are usually more. So far, so good, no stings.
